Cornel Burtica

Cornel Burtică (born September 3, 1931 in Zegujani , Floreşti , Mehedinți district ; † June 11, 2013 , Cluj-Napoca ) was a Romanian diplomat and politician of the Romanian Communist Party PMR (Partidul Muncitoresc Român) and from 1965 PCR (Partidul Comunist Român ) , who acted as ambassador to Italy , Morocco and Malta between 1966 and 1969 and was a member of the Political Executive Committee of the Central Committee (CC) from 1974 to 1982 and also a member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the PCR between 1974 and 1979. He was also minister for several years and also vice-prime minister between 1977 and 1982.

Life

Studies, youth functionary and ambassador

After attending school in 1951, Burtică began studying electromechanics at the Institute of Geology and Mining in Bucharest , which he graduated as an engineer in 1955 . He then worked for some time as an organizer in the Bucharest City Committee of the Union of Young Working People UTM (Uniunea Tineretului Muncitor) , the youth association of the Communist Party, and joined the PMR as a member in March 1956. He then began his professional career in 1956 as chief researcher and university assistant at the Institute for Mining, but shortly afterwards switched to the Institute for Oil, Natural Gas and Geology.

In September 1957 he took over the function of secretary of the committee of student associations in Bucharest and at the same time became a candidate of the party committee of the University of Bucharest . In 1961 he became a member of the Grand National Assembly (Marea Adunare Națională) for the first time , where he represented the constituency of Ilie Pintilie until 1965 . In addition, he was until March 31, 1962 Secretary of the Central Committee of the UTM and at the same time President of the Council of the UASR (Uniunea Asociațiilor Studenților Comuniste din România) .

Subsequently, Burtică moved to the service of the Foreign Ministry and was initially counselor at the embassy in France until March 7, 1966 . Shortly before that, he was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Italy on February 10, 1966 and held this diplomatic post until April 29, 1969. Minister and Central Committee Secretary

After his return to Romania, Burtică was appointed Minister for Foreign Trade (Ministru al Comerțului Exterior) in the government of Prime Minister Ion Gheorghe Maurer on April 29, 1969 and held this ministerial office until February 23, 1972. Vice Prime Minister and loss of power in 1982

In May 1982 Burtică lost his influential party and government offices.
