Sleepless in New York is a 2014 documentary by Oscar- nominated director and producer Christian Frei and deals with the topic of lovesickness.

Three protagonists are accompanied in their everyday life so that the viewer participates directly in their suffering. The anthropologist Helen Fisher explains what processes take place in the lovesick brain and how you can free yourself from them.

Helen Fisher

The anthropologist Helen Fisher is also called "Doctor Love" by her colleagues. She looks into the brains of people in love and those who have just been abandoned and is amazed at this "madness of the gods". She is considered a leading expert in the biology of love. No other scientist and her work are referred to as often in love studies as Fisher. Der Spiegel describes her as "one of the world's most famous love experts". Helen Fisher has written five best-sellers about love that have been translated into twenty languages:

  • The four types of love: who suits whom and why. Droemer Knaur Verlag, 2009
  • Why we love: the chemistry of passion. Patmos Verlag, 2005
  • The strong sex. Heyne Verlag, 2002
  • Anatomy of love. Droemer Knaur Verlag, 1993
  • The original contract. Sexual foundations of human development. Lübbe Verlag, 1983

Helen Fisher was the world's first researcher to begin scanning the brains of lovesick patients with a functional magnetic resonance tomograph . She found out that the same regions become active as in the case of severe addiction to heroin, cocaine or amphetamines. And that lovesickness can cause physical pain, comparable to toothache.

Quotes from the movie

- Rosey La Rouge : fell in love during the mermaid parade

“If I close my eyes I remember how he smells… That drug… I just want a hit. Just one fix of that smell ... "

- Alley Scott : left 4 days ago

“When you get rejected in love you still continue to love this person. In fact you love them even harder. "

- Helen Fisher, anthropologist

“Why am I passing by her house almost every night? Sometimes I even park on her street. Why do I do this? "

- Michael Hariton : left 2 weeks ago

Quote director

«I like to enter new terrain, even dangerous ones. My most famous film is set in the war. And I've shot in space, in Cuba and Afghanistan and on really difficult terrain. Where filming actually seems impossible. I thought: maybe you can document this acute state of lovesickness in the film. We hung up flyers all over New York: Have you been rejected in love and can't let go? »
