Steve M. Thompson
Steve M. Thompson (born October 27, 1944 in Cottage Grove , Oregon ) is an American politician. He belongs to the Republican Party .
Thompson grew up in Oregon where he attended the Oregon Institute of Technology and Southern Oregon University . In 1965 he joined the army and was transferred to Alaska . 1967 Thompson retired from the US Army with the rank of sergeant . For the next several decades he ran an auto parts business in Fairbanks .
In 1999, Thompson sold his company and turned to politics. In 2001 he was elected Mayor of Fairbanks. He was re-elected in 2004 and was not allowed to stand for a third time because of the limitation in terms of office. Instead, Thompson won a seat on the city council in 2007, but he soon resigned due to the death of his wife.
Steve Thompson came back into politics in 2010. He ran for the seat of the 10th electoral district for the Alaska House of Representatives and won with 62.88% of the vote. After a reorganization of the constituencies now in the 3rd district, Thompson was re-elected in November 2012 - in this election he had no opponent.
