Sleepy Hollow Cemetery
The Cemetery Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Sleepy Hollow , New York , was Washington Irving's story The Legend of the Sleepy Hollow : (original title The Legend of Sleepy Hollow known). The cemetery is approximately 36 acres and is close to the traditional Old Dutch Burying Ground . It was founded in 1849 as Tarrytown Cemetery and renamed Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in honor of Irving after his death.
The cemetery is u. a. the final resting place of the following personalities:
- Elizabeth Arden (1884–1966), founder of the well-known cosmetics company
- Leo Baekeland (1863–1944), inventor of Bakelite
- Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919), founder of the Carnegie Steel Company and philanthropist
- Walter Chrysler (1875–1940), founder of the automobile company of the same name
- Rudolf Cronau (1855–1939), German-American painter, illustrator, journalist and author, founder of the Steuben Society of America
- Washington Irving (1783-1859), author of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
- George Jones (1811-1891), founder of the New York Times
- Albert Lasker (1880–1952), American advertising entrepreneur and philanthropist
- William Rockefeller (1841–1922), brother of John Rockefeller and co-founder of the Standard Oil Company
- Carl Schurz (1829–1906), March revolutionary and US Secretary of the Interior
- Francis Pharcellus Church (1839–1906), author of the famous article Is There a Santa Claus?
- Joseph Urban (1872–1933), first Austrian, later American architect, illustrator and set designer
- Thomas J. Watson (1874–1956), chairman of IBM from 1949 to 1956
- Harry Helmsley (1909–1997), real estate tycoon
