Slipper Island ( Māori : Whakahau ) is a small private resort island off the northern coast of the North Island of New Zealand .

geography

The 2.77 km long and up to 1.87 km wide island extends 4 km east of the coast of the Coromandel Peninsula and a good 6 km southeast of the town of Pauanui . As to the administrative division, it belongs to Waikato . 0.5 km and 1.37 km southwest of the island are two smaller offshore, wooded and uninhabited islands, Penguin Island and Rabbit Island .

In the southwest bay of the island there is a small ship landing stage and in the northwest part a runway consisting of a grass runway for single-engine small aircraft has been created. A small lighthouse operated by Maritime New Zealand can be found on the east side of the island.

history

The island is one of the few islands in New Zealand that is privately owned. Until 2015, the island was owned by the Needham family, who turned the 200  hectares of land available for well-paying people looking for relaxation into a resort and rented it out. But in April 2015, the heirs sold the 45-year-old island to an Auckland- based Chinese investor named Wendy Weimei Wu for more than NZ $ 7 million  . There was disagreement between the heirs at the time about the sale of the family property, but Liz Needham , one of the thirteen siblings of the community of heirs, finally prevailed with her 61% stake in the company Slipper Island Resort Ltd , which owned the island.

use

The resort, which is marketed by the company Slipper Island Resort Ltd. , is located on a small bay on the sheltered west side of the island .
