The Sloupský potok , formerly Štolpich (German Stolpichbach , also Stolpich , formerly Stollenbach ) is a left tributary of the Smědá ( Wittig ) in the Czech Republic .

course

The Sloupský potok arises west of the hill Na Chatkách at the Malý Štolp pond near Ferdinandov in the Jizera Mountains foothills by the union of the two source streams Černý Štolpich and Bílý Štolpich, which rises on the Jizera Mountains ridge:

  • The right and longer source stream is the Černý Štolpich , also Velký Štolpich or Velký Sloupský potok ( Black Stolpich ). It rises at Holubník ( pigeon house, 1070 m ) and forms a deep gorge with the 30 m high Stolpich Falls between the Ořešník ( nut stone , 800 m) and the Krásná Maři ( Schöne Marie ).
  • The Bílý Štolpich , also Malý Štolpich or Malý Sloupský potok ( White Stolpich ) is the left source brook of the Sloupský potok. It originates on the saddle Hřebínek ( Kammel ) and forms between the Svinské čelo ( Saukuppen , 781 m) and the Skalní also brána a gorge with waterfalls.

The Sloupský potok first flows in a northerly direction and turns to the southwest at Wildnerův kříž. The further course leads past the settlement V Lukách. The Sloupský potok then takes a northerly direction on its lower reaches and flows past the Haken pond. After 7.6 kilometers the Sloupský potok flows into the Smědá in Raspenava .

Several nameless smaller streams from the Jizera Mountains flow into the Sloupský potok on the left side.

Use of hydropower

In 1521 an ironworks was built at the mouth of the Stolpichbach in the Wittig. The water power of the stream was used to drive the stamping mills and the bellows for the blast furnace. In addition, wooden rafts were made to the piles on the Stolpich, which supplied the hut with charcoal.

After Ferdinandov was founded, the water-rich Schwarze Stolpich was used to drive water wheels. The paper mill was built in 1783, later several sawmills followed and in 1872 a glass grinding shop. There were ten ditches over a length of one kilometer. In dry periods, water from the White Stolpich could be fed to the Black Stolpich via a weir. After the glass grinding shop at the upper end of Ferdinandov on the edge of the forest was converted into another paper mill after 1880, its wastewater contaminated the Schwarzen Stolpich until it ceased operations in 1966. In the 20th century, hydropower was increasingly used to generate energy.

In the 1970s there were various plans to build a dam on Sloupský potok below Ferdinandov. These initially envisaged a reservoir of 12 ha for 3.11 million m³ of water, later an enlarged version with 70 ha and 11 million m³, whereby 73 houses of Ferdinandov would have been flooded. In 1983 a project was created for a pumped storage plant with a 90 hectare reservoir for 4.4 million m³ of water near Ferdinandov, the upper basin of which is located on the Poledník and which should provide 1,370 GWh of electricity per year. However, none of these projects were implemented.
