Slovan is a term for Czech or Slovak sports clubs . The name is derived from the ethnic group of the Slavs , Slované in Czech, Slovania in Slovak.

In the course of the reorganization of sport in Czechoslovakia in 1952/53, clubs were given the name Slovan, which belonged to a sponsoring company in the following areas: public administration and justice, health, social and cultural services, printing and publishing, as well as monetary and insurance. After the Velvet Revolution in 1989, many sports clubs kept the name.

In Slovakia the following sports clubs are called Slovan:

The FC Nitra was from 1956 to 1965 Slovan Nitra .

The FK Teplice was called Slovan Teplice from 1960 to 1966 , the 1st SK Prostějov was called Slovan Prostějov from 1956 to 1958 . The Slovenian basketball club KK Geoplin Slovan from Ljubljana also has this name in the club name.

There is also a sports club in Austria called Slovan , the SK Slovan - Hütteldorfer AC football club . It emerged from the SK Slovan Wien association founded in 1902 by a Czech minority in Vienna and the Hütteldorfer AC founded in 1911.
