The Fortuna league is the highest football - league of Slovakia . It has been sponsored by the sports betting provider Fortuna since the 2014/15 season after the Corgoň brewery withdrew after ten years of sponsorship.

history

The first Slovak football league was established in 1939. In the time of the 1st Slovak Republic, five seasons were played until the end, in the sixth season (1944/45) only the first two rounds. After 1993 after the end of the federation with the Czech Republic, the joint league was not continued.

The record champion is ŠK Slovan Bratislava with eight championship titles. The current (2017) title holder is MŠK Žilina . This club has won the Slovak championship seven times since 2002, making it the most successful club on a national level in the 21st century.

The league has been played in the playoff system since the 2017/18 season. The 12 clubs play for the placements in the first round of the season, the result of which in the second half of the season forms the basis for a division of the teams into two groups of six teams each. The six best-placed clubs reach the championship round, the teams in positions seven to twelve play against relegation.
