The Smith Inlet is a bay on the Pennell Coast of the East Antarctic Victoria Land . It lies between Cape Moore and Cape Oakeley . The tongue of the Barnett Glacier flows into it .
The bay was discovered in 1841 by the British polar explorer James Clark Ross during his Antarctic expedition (1839–1843). Ross named the inlet after Alexander John Smith (1812–1872), mate on the expedition ship HMS Erebus .
