The Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel (SPNI) ( Hebrew החברה להגנת הטבע HaChevra LeHaganat HaTeva , German 'Society for Nature Conservation in Israel' ) is the largest Israeli nature conservation organization. It was founded in 1953 and is based in Tel Aviv . With over 100,000 members, it is one of the largest Israeli civil society organizations.

The SPNI was founded by Azariah Alon and Amotz Zahavi in response to the planned agricultural development of the Chula Plain in northern Israel. While the SPNI initially orientated itself closely to government policy after its foundation, the organization became increasingly independent politically active in the 1980s and in some cases organized protests against environmental policy decisions by state authorities. Around 800 employees work for SPNI in different areas, such as species protection, environmental education ( field schools ), youth work, bird protection and environmental tourism. The various work areas are divided into several departments.

SPNI is the Israeli partner of BirdLife International and belongs to the European section within the organization. From € Nature SPNI is the Israeli project partners. In 2010 there was bilateral contact between the German nature conservation youth at NABU and the department for environmental education at SPNI.

Environmental Protection Division

The largest field of work is nature and environmental protection. SPNI's Environmental Protection Division (EPD), for example, monitors the increasing sealing of the landscape and tries to take legal action against it. The department works u. a. on the following topics:

  • Rivers Many rivers in Israel have been drained and straightened. Often the rivers and streams are overexploited as water suppliers for industry, agriculture and private water supply. SPNI is working on this problem with a river restoration campaign.
  • Integrated coastal zone management
  • Lobbying
  • Transport / air quality

SPNI operates field schools on the Hermon , Golan , Alon Tavor, Achziv, Meron, Ein Gedi, Har Ha Negev, Hazeva and Eilat .

Bird Division

SPNI runs a species protection project to monitor birds of prey . The project is funded by the Israeli utility company and the EU's LIFE project .

The kibbutz Kfar Ruppin , located near the Jordanian border, is expanding SPNI into an integrated bird station. SPNI operates field schools on the Hermon , Golan , Alon Tavor, Achziv, Meron, Ein Gedi, Har Ha Negev, Hazeva and Eilat.

Israel Trails Committee (ITC)

As a department of the SPNI, the Trail Committee is responsible for the signposting and maintenance of hiking trails with a total length of 10,000 kilometers. Of these, 950 kilometers belong to the nationwide Israel National Trail . Full-time employees of the SPNI are busy maintaining the paths.

American Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel (ASPNI)
