history

Royal Society of Arts, London - United Kingdom

The RSA was founded by William Shipley in 1754 and was modeled on the Dublin Society for improving Husbandry, Manufactures and other useful Arts . In 1774 the company moved to a building in central London designed by the Adam Brothers ( James Adam and Robert Adam ). This building on John Adam Street is still used by the RSA and houses paintings by Irish artist James Barry in the Great Room . In addition, the company has expanded to include other buildings over the years.

The RSA hosted Britain's first contemporary art exhibition in 1760, with great success. Because of this success, the Royal Academy of Arts was founded in 1768 by Sir Thomas Gainsborough and Sir Joshua Reynolds , two early members of the RSA.

The RSA was given the special status of the Royal Charter in 1847 . In 1876 the RSA founded the National Training School for Music in London, which later became the Royal College of Music . In 1908 King Edward VII approved the use Royal on behalf of the RSA.

In 1936, the RSA awarded the Royal Designers for Industry (RDI) award for the first time . This award is intended to honor those who have created excellent design in the manufacturing and industrial sectors. The Faculty of Royal Designers for Industry was then founded to promote design and application for industry. Experts from different fields such as engineering, furniture industry, clothing and textile design, graphic design, theater and film design are represented in the faculty.

An example of the success of the RSA was recorded in the Oxford English Dictionary . The dictionary collected in 1980 from a Journal of the RSA the first use of the word sustainability ( sustainability ) with respect to environmental economics.
