history

Park plan
The artificial Tarpeian rock , named after a Roman model.

The Sofijiwka Park was laid out in 1796 by the Polish magnate Stanisław Potocki (1753-1805) and named after his wife, Sophie Potocka , also Sofija Witt-Potocka (1760-1822). He gave Sofijiwka to his wife on her name day in May 1802. The Polish military engineer Ludwig Metzel was the architect of the topographical and architectural planning of the park and directed the construction work. Sofiyivka was built in the forest-free area next to the Kamyanka River. Bumps in this area were used in a clever, but not previously planned, way to build the park. After the November uprising in Poland , the park was confiscated and given by Tsar Nicholas I to his wife Alexandra Feodorovna . Since then the park has been called "Tsaritsyn Sad" (Tsarina's Garden). In the times of the Soviet Union , the park was given its original name again and was declared a nature reserve.

Discovered on July 19, 1971, the asteroid of the main inner belt (2259) Sofievka was named after the park.

In 1985, the minor planet number 2259 has been to the park Sofijiwka named.

Landmarks in the park

Sofiyivka was planned as an illustration of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey . Afterwards, other parts of the park were thematically expanded through selected compositions of trees, landscape elements and architecture. The topics are, for example: English Garden , Champs-Élysées , Little Switzerland , Lake Geneva , Caucasian Mountain . The park is decorated with ancient statues. There are several man-made ponds, mountains, waterfalls, fountains, and a 224-meter-long underground river. In 2007 Sofiyivka was voted one of the Seven Wonders of Ukraine. Sofiivka is visited by 500 thousand tourists annually.
