The Sohmer Piano Building is a 13-story skyscraper in the district of Manhattan in New York City . It's located at 170 Fifth Avenue , on the corner of 22nd Street, in the Ladies' Mile Historic District . The well-known Flatiron Building (also Fuller Building) is located in the immediate vicinity on Broadway .
The building with the gilded dome was built in 1897 according to a design by Robert Maynicke in the style of Beaux Arts architecture . It takes its name from the company that used the building as one of the first tenants, the piano manufacturer Sohmer & Co.
The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission listed the building in 1989. The building was renovated from 2002 to 2005 and is now used as a residential building.
