The Solana power plant ( Solana Generating Station ) near Gila Bend in the American state of Arizona is the largest solar thermal power plant in parabolic trough design in the world. The 250 MW plant, which went online in 2013 and extends over 7.7 km², was built by the Spanish company Abengoa Solar . The Spanish Abengoa Yield is now the owner of the large-scale plant after the Liberty Interactive Corporation paid out, which was involved in the first five years in order to be able to take advantage of the state subsidy for green electricity in the form of tax discounts.

The power plant uses 3232 parabolic trough collectors (Solar Collector Assemblies, SCA) from Abengoa Solar (type E2, Eucumsa) with each 125 m long, 5.75 m wide aperture , a total of 2.3 · 10 6 m 2 . The thermal input power of up to around 2500 MW is collected by oil, which is pumped through pipes in the focal lines of the mirrors and is heated to almost 400 ° C in the process.
During the day, part of the heat output is transferred to molten salt heat storage . Six of these storage tanks hold a total of 125,000 tons of salt or 1680 MWh of thermal energy, which is sufficient for 6 hours of full-load operation with the heat exchangers designed for 280 MW . Each storage tank has two tanks with a height of 10.4 m and a diameter of 37.2 m and a nominal temperature of 250 ° C and 350 ° C, each connected via a heat exchanger. A molten salt consisting of 60% sodium nitrate (NaNO 3 ) and 40% potassium nitrate (KNO 3 ), melting point 240 ° C, is used. If the salt solidifies, it has to be heated up electrically.
With the hot oil, from the collector field during the day and from the heat storage system at night, steam is generated via a heat exchanger, which drives two steam turbine generator sets . The steam is essentially cooled by evaporation from local groundwater in wet cooling towers .
The turbo sets each produce 140 MW gross and 125 MW net. In this way, up to 70,000 households can be sustainably supplied with electricity . When the operation is throttled, a turbo generator is switched off.
