The Soliser Viaduct is a railway bridge east of the village of Solis in the Swiss canton of Graubünden . It is part of the railway line from Thusis to Filisur of the Rhaetian Railway .
construction
The bridge spanning the Albula River is 85 m high and 164 m long. It consists of a main arch with a span of 42 m and ten secondary arches of 8 to 10 m. It is the second highest bridge on the RhB after the Wiesen Viaduct and the third highest railway bridge in Switzerland after the Sitter Viaduct .
history
The Solis Viaduct was calculated by the engineer Hans Studer as the first stone arch bridge in Switzerland according to the theory of elasticity . This allowed the vaults to be parabolic and therefore particularly slim. The bridge was built in 1902 by Munari, Cayre and Marasi ; the construction costs amounted to 125,000 francs.
In 1997 the Solis Viaduct was renovated at great expense. The insulation between the ballast bed and the masonry was renewed by installing a new seal with liquid applied plastic film and shotcrete. In addition, the track and the gravel trough were renewed.
