SomaFM is an ad-free internet station with 20 radio stations on different music styles, ranging from electronic music to indie rock . The station, founded in San Francisco in 1999 , uses SHOUTcast server capacities and is financed through donations. This means that the radio program can be offered free of advertising. The stations of the station are each limited to a certain genre of music. There are also topics that are supposed to represent the individual radio stations and on the basis of which the pieces of music are selected. The current more than 30 stations include:

Litigation with the RIAA

SomaFM is known, among other things, through a legal dispute with the influential RIAA , the association of the music industry in the USA. The RIAA demanded US $ 15,000 per month in license fees from the Internet radio and obtained its temporary shutdown in June 2002.

Rusty Hodge, the founder of SomaFM , then organized a civil protest, which led to a hearing before the US Congress . In response to this hearing, the Small Broadcasters Amendment Act was passed, which enables an internet broadcaster like SomaFM to work for license fees of between $ 2,000 and $ 5,000 per year.

The Internet Radio Day of Silence took place on June 27, 2007 and was also supported by SomaFM. This time the complaint was a substantial increase in fees by the American Copyright Royalty Board.
