Something in Blue is an album by Thelonious Monk . The recordings, which were made in London's Chappell Studios on November 15, 1971, appeared on Black Lion Records in 1972 as a long-playing record and in 1992 for the first time as a compact disc . The entire recordings of the London sessions, the last of the pianist's under his own name, were published by Black Lion in 1988/89 under the title The London Collection Vol. 1-3 .

background

After appearances and a. in Cologne and Paris at the end of 1969 Thelonious Monk had disbanded his regular quartet, which most recently included Charlie Rouse , Nate Hygelund (bass) and Paris Wright (drums). With a short-lived quartet (with Paul Jeffrey , Larry Ridley and Lennie McBrowne ) he toured Japan in 1970; then the pianist joined the all-star formation The Giants of Jazz put together by George Wein . With a series of concerts at the Victoria Theater in London in November 1971, the first world tour of this troupe - which in addition to Monk also included jazz greats such as Art Blakey , Dizzy Gillespie , Sonny Stitt and Kai Winding - ended on November 14, 1971.

The producer Alan Bates took the opportunity to get Thelonious Monk into the studio the following day for his label Black Lion Records, founded in 1968. The pianist finally spent a total of six hours there; initially he played solo for three hours before Blakey and bassist Al McKibbon joined them. The tracks "Evidence", "Criss Cross", "Hackensack" and "Nutty" were then recorded in trio.

reception

According to Thomas Fitterling, Monk's studio recordings in London are characterized by "a special ease." Two blues numbers , "Something in Blue" and "Blue Shere", were created spontaneously as improvisations and are the highlights of the solo recordings. The trio recordings have something of the strongly swinging angularity of early Monk recordings due to Blakey's hard-hitting drums.

Lindsay Planer wrote in his review of The Complete Black Lion and Vogue Recordings of Thelonious Monk that this low-key session really underscores Monk's brilliance within a group dynamic. The author's highlights include the versions of “Criss Cross”, “I Mean You” and two extended versions of “Hackensack”; these make listening to this set imperative regardless of the historical implications.

Editorial notes

With the material recorded on November 15, 1971, Alan Barnes produced the follow-up albums The Man I Love (BLP 30141) (1973) on Black Lion and 1977 on Blue Sphere (BLP 30202). From 1988 onwards, the recordings appeared in a different arrangement in the compilation The London Collection: Volume One (BLP60101), The London Collection: Volume Two (BLP 60116) and The London Collection: Volume Three (BLCD 760142). Monk's collected recordings for Black Lion, coupled with Piano Solo (1954), appeared in the edition The Complete Black Lion and Vogue Recordings of Thelonious Monk on Mosaic Records .
