Location of the Kellinghusen special ammunition depot in Schleswig-Holstein

The Kellinghusen special ammunition storage ( SAS ) was a depot for tactical nuclear weapons of the armed forces of the United States about three kilometers northwest of the city of Kellinghusen in the Steinburg district .

task

In the context of nuclear participation , the American nuclear battlefield weapons should be used by German delivery systems. Artillery shells for 203mm and 155mm howitzers (W-33 and W-79 or W-48) were stored .

Associations

Associations for which the nuclear weapons were provided, were the Division artillery 6. Panzergrenadierdivision (field artillery battalion 61 and the rocket artillery 62 in Kellinghusenstraße ) and the Brigade artillery units ( Panzerartilleriebataillon 165 in Wentorf , Panzerartilleriebataillon 177 , Hamburg - Rahlstedt and Panzerartilleriebataillon 185 in Boostedt ).

The American units guarding the "inner ring" were 13th US Army Field Artillery Detachment (USAFAD) (1961-1992), 552nd US Army Artillery Group (until 1966) and 294th US Army Artillery Group (from June 1966). The “outer ring” was secured by the accompanying battery 6 (the accompanying battery 6 also had security tasks in the inner area), which with 300 men had almost a battalion strength . It was erected in November 1960 and moved from Boostedt to Kellinghusen in 1964 when the Liliencron barracks were being expanded. The US soldiers withdrew in late 1991.

State today

The area has served as a recreational area since the camp was closed and is freely accessible. The remaining buildings are gutted, open and also accessible. However, some of them are badly damaged by vandalism . An intact tunnel system connects individual buildings and positions .
