Sonita Alizadeh

Sonita Alizadeh ( Persian سونیتا علیزاده, DMG Sonītā ʿAlīzādäh ; * 1997 ) is an Afghan rapper . She first gained fame through her song Brides for Sale , in which she protested against the practice of forced marriage .

Life

Sonita Alizadeh grew up in the city of Herat . To escape the influence of the Taliban , her family fled to Iran . At the age of ten she was supposed to be forcibly married for the first time, but this did not materialize. In Iran, influenced by the Iranian rapper Yas and the American rapper Eminem , she began to write and record her own songs. The NGO Strongheart Group became aware of the artist through the video for her song Brides for Sale . The organization Sonita Alizadeh then offered to help her with the financing of a student visa, which enabled her to travel to the United States in 2015, where she has since attended the Wasatch Academy in Utah .

The Iranian director Rokhsareh Ghaem Maghami accompanied Sonita Alizadeh for three years to document her story. The film Sonita won both the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize: Documentary and the Audience Award: World Cinema Documentary at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival .
