Sonja Frey (born April 22, 1993 in Vienna ) is an Austrian handball player .

Career

Sonja Frey played for WAT Fünfhaus from 2001 to 2003 and then for MGA Fivers. From 2012, the 1.69 meter tall left winger , which can also be used in the backcourt , was under contract with the German Bundesliga club Thüringer HC , with whom she won the German championship in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 and the DHB Cup in 2013. In the 2016/17 season she was under contract with the French first division club Cercle Dijon Bourgogne . In the summer of 2017, she moved to league rival Issy Paris Hand, who renamed itself Paris 92 a year later . Since the 2019/20 season she has been playing for the Danish first division team Esbjerg . With Esbjerg she won the Danish championship in 2020.

Frey is a member of the Austrian national team , for which she took part in the 2009 World Cup in China at the age of 16 . In 2011 she finished third with the Austrian U-19 national team at the World Cup in the Netherlands , and Frey was the second best goalscorer of the tournament with 63 goals.
