In the thirties of the 19th century. hard coal was discovered on the Sonnenberg and from March 1839 commercial mining began with varying degrees of success and intensity. The mining was intensified especially during the two world wars. During the First World War , the Gustav Weinmann company had already driven numerous tunnels into the mountain and mined almost 8,000 tonnes of poor quality coal in 10-hour shifts of 40–50 miners . During the Second World War , Fuga AG Luzern made a significant contribution to the coal supply in Switzerland with a total production of over 20,000 tons. The main buyers of the Sonnenberg coal included industrial companies in the region such as the iron works of Moos and the Perlen paper mill and the Kriens-based Spinnerei Schappe and the Bell machine works.
