The Rockrose-Grünwidderchen ( Adscita geryon ) is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of burnet (Zygaenidae).
features
The moths reach a wingspan of about 20 millimeters. They have golden-green shiny fore wings , the tips of which are blunt. They have a slightly light, fringed edge. Their hind wings are blackish gray. The antennae of the males, in contrast to the thread-like ones of the females, are heavily combed and have somewhat thicker segments at the tip.
The caterpillars are about 12 millimeters long. They have a light gray line on the back, which is dark at the edges, next to this a wide, yellowish or white longitudinal line, which is sharply defined dark on the side and on the sides another, reddish brown colored longitudinal band. They have numerous, short, white hairs.
Occurrence
The animals occur in southern and central Europe , east to Turkey and England . They live on warm dry grass and alpine mats up to an altitude of 2,400 meters. They are rare and do not occur in many places, but are occasionally still common in the Alps . The moths like to suckle on Handelwurzen (Gymnadenia).
Way of life
Flight times
The diurnal moths fly annually in one generation in July.
Food of the caterpillars
So far, the caterpillars have only been found on yellow sunflower ( Helianthemum nummularium ), but since they also eat blood-red cranesbills ( Geranium sanguineum ) and other cranesbills in breeding , it can be assumed that they can also be found on these plants.
development
The females lay their eggs in groups on the underside of the leaves of the forage plants. At first the caterpillars live as miners in the leaves, after the second moult they scrape off the leaves and later eat the whole leaf. They overwinter and pupate in spring in a loose, white web.
