The Sophia Gardens (from sponsorship reasons officially The SSW SWALEC ) is a Cricket - Stadium in the Welsh city of Cardiff , that in the same Park. The stadium serves as the home of the Glamorgan County Cricket Club and is one of nine current test stadiums in the UK .

history

The stadium was for many years the home of the Cardiff Athletic Club's cricket division and was not continuously used by the Glamorgan County Cricket Club. It wasn't until 1995 that Glamorgan took over the stadium and signed a 125-year lease. In the course of this, further investments were made in the infrastructure.

Capacity and infrastructure

In 2006 it was announced that the stadium would be renovated to meet test standards. As a result, the capacity was expanded to over 15,000 places. The two ends are called the River Taff End and Cathedral Road End .

use

In addition to county cricket, international matches also take place. The first was a game of the 1999 Cricket World Cup . Since then there have been numerous home games for the English national team , including test games since 2009. At the ICC Champions Trophy 2013 and 2017 , the stadium was the venue for group matches and semi-finals. Games will also be played here at the upcoming Cricket World Cup 2019 .
