Sophia († July 16, 1244 in Gernrode ) was the abbess of the free secular monastery of Gernrode and Frose from 1220 to 1244 . She was the successor to Adelheid II von Büren.

Life

Sophia from the Askanians was a daughter of Duke Bernhard of Saxony with Jutta of Poland, daughter of Duke Mieszko III. of Gniezno . Her brother, Prince Heinrich I of Anhalt, was the abbey 's guardian. She was raised in Gernrode.

The time when Sophia took office is probably at the end of 1220, because her predecessor Adelheid II died on November 3rd, 1220. Furthermore, Sophia is mentioned in a document as abbess in 1221.

She acquired extensive goods in Rieder from the church treasury in order to protect it from embezzlement or theft . She had this purchase confirmed by her brother Heinrich I at a regional court in Aschersleben in 1223. The confirmation of the privileges of the monastery by Pope Gregory IX. it received it on June 12, 1227, it also lists the goods newly acquired in Rieder.

She probably died on July 16, 1244, because that was the day her memory was committed.
