Seal of Abbess Gertrud III. from Everstein

Gertrude III. von Everstein came from the family of the Counts of Everstein , who had their headquarters at the Everstein Castle in Polle near Holzminden on the Weser . The Counts of Everstein were an influential dynasty in what is now Lower Saxony towards the end of the 12th and up to the middle of the 13th century , but ultimately could not hold their own against the Dukes of Braunschweig-Lüneburg .

Before being elected abbess, she held the office of provostess, as Gertrud was named as such on May 25, 1302 in a document from abbess Irmingard II. The confirmation of the election of the abbess by Pope John XXII. took place on August 3, 1334. This letter speaks of the fact that Gertrud III. is the successor of Jutta von Oesede in the office of abbess. This is important insofar as the chronicler Andreas Popperodt also lists an abbess Hildburg and Otto von Heinemann lists a Hildburg von Wunstorf, which, however, could not have existed in this way.

Gertrude III. died on March 9, 1344 in Gernrode. Shortly before her death, on February 28, 1344, she donated one and a half hooves in Bicklingen for the salvation of her soul. The village of Bicklingen no longer exists today, it is a desert in the northeast of Gernrode. Gertrude IV of Hesse was elected as her successor on March 22, 1344.
