history

From 1860 onwards, the merchant and later consul Julius Friedrich Wilhelm Reimers was the owner of the properties at Harvestehuder Weg No. 28 to 36, which reached along today's street Sophienterrasse as far as Mittelweg. In 1861 he laid out a private road for development and named it Sophienterrasse after his wife Maria Sophie Frederica Reimers (1826–1918). Reimers had the Villa Sophia, a “crenellated, palais-like structure” built on the property. The large central part of the site with the villa was bought by the German Reich in 1935 and built on with a site headquarters and various farm buildings. The General Command of Military District X of the Wehrmacht was housed there. The drafts for this building complex with a monumental three-wing complex and a central projection arranged by strict pillars came from the architects Distel & Grubitz. The Villa Sophia was occupied by the commanding general of the X. Army Corps , General Wilhelm Kniehauer (1878–1939). From 1939 to 1945 the Sophienterrasse was called General-Kniehauer-Straße. After the war, British troops were housed in the military compound. From 1956 to 2005 the Bundeswehr headquarters was located there in Hamburg. After the withdrawal of the Bundeswehr, the future use was controversial. The Federal Ministry of Finance sold the 44,000 square meter property, which extends to Harvestehuder Weg, to Frankonia Eurobau Investment for an estimated purchase price of between 35 and 40 million euros . After lengthy disputes, a new development plan was drawn up for the property . It provides for the construction of apartments and offices.

present

The former location command of the Bundeswehr at Sophienterrasse 14 is currently being converted into an apartment block as part of the Sophienterrassen real estate project. The massive facade and the staircase are preserved for reasons of monument protection . However, the building is almost completely gutted and rebuilt. In addition to the apartments, an entrance lobby and a club lounge are to be created. These areas should be designed by Karl Lagerfeld .

Sophienterrasse refugee home

At number Sophienterrasse 1, at the corner of Mittelweg, you will find the former Bundeswehr District Army Replacement Office from the 1950s. The building is to be converted into a refugee home for around 200 asylum seekers in 23 residential units. A building permit was issued on September 29, 2014. Affected residents complained against it, whereupon the district administration will change the area for public use in the Harvestehude 15 development plan . The cost of the property renovation will amount to 4.5 million euros.
