The Austrian Mehlbeere ( Sorbus austriaca ), also Ostalpen-Mehlbeere , Alpine Mehlbeere and Alps Oxelbirne called, is a species of the genus of flour berries ( Sorbus ) in the family Rosaceae (Rosaceae). Within the whitebeam, it belongs to the Sorbus mougeotii group .

features

The species can be distinguished from Sorbus mougeotii in the following characteristics :

The leaves are broadly oval to almost circular, wider and larger overall. They are 8 to 11 inches long and about 9 inches wide. The length to width ratio is approximately 1.5. The leaf base is broad-wedge-shaped. Towards the base there are lobes that cut into the leaf blade by up to 1/6, are sawn and partially overlap. Towards the tip, the leaf is more shallowly lobed, and the tip itself is only sawn twice.

The fruits are 10 to 13 millimeters long, 13 millimeters thick, more spherical and usually larger. They have numerous large lenticels .

In contrast to representatives of the Sorbus aria group, whose leaves also have an incised edge, the leaves of Sorbus austriaca have thicker hairs and less pointed side nerves. At least in a few of the leaves the angle of the lateral nerves of the lower half of the blade to the leaf axis is about 60 ° or more.

The flowering period extends from May to June. The fruit ripens from July to September and is 3 weeks before that of Sorbus aria .

Occurrence

The Austrian whitebeam occurs from the Eastern Alps to the Carpathians and the Illyrian Mountains. To the west, the area may extend as far as Vorarlberg. Older, unconfirmed reports are available for the Apennines and Greece.

The habitat of the Austrian whitebeam are forests and bushy slopes in the Alps and pre-Alps as far as the Krummholz region. The highest sites at approx. 1700 meters are in Styria, Upper and Lower Austria. The species has similar requirements for location as Sorbus mougeotii and is also calciferous, but unlike this species, it is not calcareous.
