features

The Vosges whitebeam is a shrub or tree that grows up to 12 (rarely up to 20) meters. Branches and buds are bare compared to Sorbus aria . The leaves are 3.5 to 5.5 inches long and 6 to 10 inches wide. They are 1.8 to 2 times as long as they are wide. The front of the leaves are usually pointed, but their base is wedge-shaped. On short shoots, the leaves are incised to about 1/8 of the leaf blade . The first-order teeth are largest in the middle of the leaf margin and reach a length of 4 to 6 millimeters here, they get smaller towards the tip and the base. Its outline is broadly rounded. The second-order teeth are usually less than 1 millimeter long. There are 8 to 10 pairs of lateral nerves. The underside of the leaf has loose, gray-white felt hair. The leaf stalks have a length of 10 to 15 (rarely up to 20) millimeters.

The flowers are arranged in more or less dense, loose to densely felted, evenly shaped umbel panicles. The sepal cup and sepals are loose felt and later bald. At the time of fruiting, the sepals are conical and upright together. The oval petals are white, hardly nailed and 5 to 6, rarely up to 7 millimeters long. The 2 or 3 styluses are free.

The edible fruits are usually triple, 10 to 13 millimeters long, only a little more than 10 millimeters thick, round and red. The color remains even after drying. There are only a few small lenticels .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 4x = 68. There are also 3x cytotypes. The species reproduces apomictically .

The flowering period extends from May to June.

The species occurs in the Pyrenees , in the higher elevations of Provence , in the French and Swiss Jura , in the Swiss plateau and the Swiss Alps . To the east the species can be found as far as Vorarlberg , in the northeast it reaches southern Baden-Württemberg , in the south the Aosta valley . Overall, the area is not yet known for certain, the Vosges whitebeam was often misunderstood or not sufficiently differentiated from the Austrian whitebeam .
