Sorority (Austria)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sorority Association. Association for cross-sector networking and career advancement of women in Austria is a women's network based in Vienna , which was initiated in 2014 by Katharina Brandl and Therese Kaiser. The association has around 600 members, making it one of the largest women's networks in Austria . The association organizes around 50 events with feminist content, mainly in Vienna, including network meetings, workshops, round tables for feminist mothers or entrepreneurs, reading groups and discussion events.

founding

Sena Beganovic , Katharina Brandl , Therese Kaiser , Vera Mayer , Sandra Nigischer and Martina Schöggl founded the association in 2014. The focus of the network is on gender equality in the labor market; The founders also initiated the association because they missed a lobby for women who broached the issue of unequal treatment at different levels. Topics such as women's poverty, paternity leave, multiple discrimination or socio-economic dependencies are also negotiated.

structure

All natural persons who see themselves as women can become members of the association. Men can financially support the network as extraordinary members. The board of directors is re-elected by the members every two years. The association has been headed by Erza Aruqaj, Stephanie Bondi, Barbara Hölzl, Vera Mayer, Sandra Nigischer, Martina Schöggl and Maria Schreiber.

concept

The Sorority's motto is “Solidarity, Sister!” And refers to three key terms in the association's work: solidarity, autonomy and network. The platform wants to strengthen solidarity, especially among women, but also between the sexes, and promote solidarity. On the one hand, traditional gender hierarchies and power structures should be questioned and broken up, and on the other hand, autonomous life decisions should be encouraged.

The network sees itself as feminist, but does not represent any particular feminist tendency. It also leaves its members open as to how they define a career; both in order to reach the broadest possible mass of progressive women.

Events

The association offers both event formats that are only designed for people who identify themselves as women, as well as formats that are accessible to all interested people.

At the beginning of 2015, the association held its first public event, the panel discussion “Your Mother” in the König Galerie in Vienna. In February 2016, the association's art and culture series “femtrails” started with a reading by Stefanie Sargnagel , followed by tours of exhibitions by Margot Pilz at MUSA in Vienna and with Renate Bertlmann through her solo exhibition in the vertical gallery in the Verbund collection in the spring 2016. In addition to screenings of Veronika Burger's video works in the Applied Innovation Lab (AIL) of the University of Applied Arts Vienna and a guest performance at the Diagonale - Festival of Austrian Films , the association started a monthly club series under the name “femtrails” in the Elektro Gönner only female DJs and VJs were booked. This was followed by screenings of films in full length, among others in cooperation with the Arena Summer Cinema .

Since 2015, Brandl and Kaiser have increasingly appeared as discussants and speakers on topics relevant to women's politics, including at the Maker Faire Vienna, the “Diagonale” and the European Forum Alpbach . They also talk about hate speech online and the hacking attacks on the club's websites.

In October 2015 and 2016, Brandl and Kaiser also organized the “Business Riot. Festival for Women, Work and Entrepreneurship ”as part of the association's work; Board members Sandra Nigischer and Martina Schöggl designed the accompanying publication “Business Riot ZINE” during the festival, which, in addition to program information, mainly provided feminist editorial content. The festival, especially in 2016, received wide media coverage in Austria and Germany.

Memberships

The association had around 600 members at the 2018 General Assembly. Sorority has been a member organization of the Austrian Women's Ring since February 2017 .
