Sotiris Petroulas

Sotiris Petroulas ( Greek Σωτήρης Πέτρουλας ; * 1943 in the Mani ; † July 21 or 22, 1965 in Athens ) was a Greek student and became a martyr of the left in Greece due to his violent death .

Petroulas was born on the Mani Peninsula in 1943 . He joined the youth organization of the left-wing Eniea Dimokratiki Aristera ( Greek Ενιαία Δημοκρατική Αριστερά ΕΔΑ , Association of the Democratic Left EDA ) at an early age . As a student of economics in Athens, after the killing of Grigoris Lambrakis, he became an activist of the Lambrakis youth named after him, led by Mikis Theodorakis . On July 21, 1965, he carried Theodorakis on his shoulders through the crowd during a demonstration in central Athens; late that evening he was killed by a police tear gas grenade.

Mikis Theodorakis immortalized him with the song Sotiris Petroulas .
