Southern Cross (German: Kreuz des Südens ) is an Australian city in Western Australia with 640 inhabitants (2016). It is 371 kilometers east of Perth and 225 kilometers west of Kalgoorlie .

history

Explorers like HM Lefroy passed the area in 1863 before gold was discovered there and described the great agricultural potential. Furthermore, were Charles Cooke Hunt and John Forrest previously there. Farmers came there in the early 1880s. Southern Cross was founded in 1888 by gold prospectors Tom Risely and Mock Toomey who found gold four miles from Koorkoordine . They named the place after the stars they used for their orientation and today the streets and localities of the city have names of the stars including the salt lake at Southern Cross . The Perth-Kalgoorlie railway line has existed since 1894.

today

The place forms the center of the Shire of Yilgarn . Yilgarn is the Aboriginal name for white stone or quartz . East of the city is a historic cemetery with the Miners Monument (German: Bergmannsdenkmal). The Yilgarn History Museum is located in the village. The not far away, so-called historical Golden Valley (German: Goldenes Tal) with a police station allows a look back at the conditions of the time around 1887/88, when gold was first found there.
