The Space Frogs ( spelling SPACE FROGS ) are a German comedy duo consisting of Steve (real name Steven Schuto) and Rick (on social networks as Rick Garrido). Her eponymous YouTube - Webvideokanal serves as a platform for their self-made sketch films that entertain a large number of audience. This channel was renamed Dead Frogs (proper spelling DEAD FROGS) and closed in 2019 . Other Space Frogs YouTube channels are the vlog channel Space Radio (spelled SPACE RADIO, now Space Frogs (spelled SPACE FROGS)) and the Let's Play channel Space Gaming (spelled SPACE GAMING) , which opened in 2011 and 2012. The radio channel was renamed with the closure of Space Frogs and used as the new main channel.

history

The Space Frogs consist of two members:

  • Rick (on social networks as Rick Garrido , born February 23, 1992)
  • Steve (real name Steven Schuto , born November 2, 1991)

Even before the founding of the Space Frogs, Steve was enthusiastic about film technology and previously produced Lego - Stop-Motion , which, however, no longer lived up to his own quality requirements. Rick, too, had an increased interest in films. Inspired by other YouTube film artists such as Thomas Ridgewell ( TomSka ) and Kathrin Fricke ( Coldmirror ), he began producing his own films, which he discontinued when it was not successful. As part of the Comenius program of the European Union at the Immanuel Kant comprehensive school in Falkensee , where both graduated from high school at the same time, they shot a video for the project together. This was followed by another joint video project for their English lessons, which they published under the title "Facts about Germans" on their newly founded channel Space Frogs . The video is no longer available due to copyright infringement .

To make video production easier and of higher quality, Rick and Steve founded a shared apartment in 2011. This was followed by membership of the YouTube network Mediakraft , and at the same time both began training as design assistants at the Babelsberg Media School in Potsdam . In addition to their main channel Space Frogs , which is mainly used for the release of their sketch films, they opened the vlog channel Space Frogs Radio (later renamed Space Radio ) in October 2011 . On both channels, the Space Frogs occasionally cooperated with other YouTubers such as Florian Mundt ( LeFloid ), which greatly contributed to increasing their popularity. In August 2012 they opened the gaming channel Space Frogs Play (later Space Gaming ). In 2013, Rick and Steve finished their training and gave up their apartment at the end of the year.

Then Rick lived with Marti Fischer and Dominik Lehmann ( mapamundi ) two floors above Steve, who moved into an apartment alone. In June 2015, Rick and Steve were nominated and selected for the German Web Video Prize in the “Comedy” category for their video “If Advertising Would Be Honest 2” . In July 2015, they left the Mediakraft network and joined the 301+ association , in whose clubhouse a studio is available to them.

Together with Florian Mundt (YouTube channel: LeFloid ) and Max Krüger (YouTube channel: Frodoapparat ), Rick and Steve had a cameo as police officers in the second chapter of the ZDF dramedy series Familie Braun broadcast in spring 2016 . The Space Frogs currently live in two separate apartments in Berlin.

Formats

Dead Frogs (Formerly: Space Frogs)

On the former main channel Space Frogs (originally Space Frogs Entertainment ), skits and short films appeared at irregular intervals, in which the Space Frogs used their acting and production skills.

There was no fixed main format, which is why the topics of the videos varied constantly. However, sequels appeared irregularly for some videos ("How Music Changes Everything", "Honest Advertising", "Dangers of Everyday Life", "The Biscuit Saga", "Dagileo" and "Andreas Klebrig"). They later renamed the channel Dead Frogs , and have not uploaded anything to it since. The videos that were originally uploaded to this channel were moved to the Space Frogs channel (originally Space Radio ). Skits and short films will continue to be published on this channel.

Space Frogs (formerly: Space Radio)

Space Radio (originally Space Frogs Radio ) served exclusively as a vlog channel, on which videos are published mostly on Tuesdays and Fridays. Although this was primarily intended to serve as a secondary channel, Space Radio has more subscribers, video views, and videos than the main Space Frogs channel . The channel has been subscribed to 1,000,000 times since August 2016.

In vlog form, current and general topics are reported subjectively from the point of view of the Space Frogs (hence the suffix “radio”), whereby the two do not take themselves too seriously and try to convey their point of view to the audience through humor.

In addition, different areas of everyday life are enumerated in types of videos (“10 types of […]”) and commented on (“'Themes!' - 'Vlog!'”), Dishes are cooked and accompanied on film (“Cooking!”), Or various magazines and newspapers analyzed in a humorous way (“magazine time”). Other formats include Photoshopping (“early shopping”), FAQs, travel vlogs, ANALyse (analyzes of other YouTubers) and Memetime (a review of various memes). Since the beginning of 2019 there has also been “The Format with the Table”, in which Rick and Steve comment on topics behind a table on a PC.

On June 23, 2019, the duo announced in the video "We kill Space Frogs AND ..." that they would merge the Space Frogs and Space Radio channels . They were moved to do this because the YouTube algorithm classified the Space Frogs channel as inactive and the latter generated less reach. Last, the duo renamed "Space Radio" Space Frogs.

Space gaming

Let's Plays of video games are published on the gaming channel Space Gaming (originally Space Frogs Play ) at irregular intervals . In addition to regular Let's Plays, the formats "Ricks Rage" (compilations of Rick's comments during actively played gameplay sequences), "Gay Time" (Rick and Steve play a single-player game in which everyone cooperatively uses an input device ) and "Best Of Space" are included Gaming ”is one of the recurring categories. Since 2017 there has been a live stream on the channel every Wednesday. In addition, the duo likes to talk about current topics, such as loot boxes or the like against a red background. Hence, Steve often calls the format “talking to red”.

Pets

Rick owns two cats named Bolin and Pabu (named after characters from The Legend of Korra ), while Steve owns a dog named Mable. These appeared several times in different videos.
