Spangereid is a formerly independent municipality in Vest-Agder ( Norway ).

location

Spangereid is centrally located on Riksvei 460 between Vigeland and Lindesnes fyr. The next larger cities are Lyngdal (12 km), Vigeland (15 km) and Mandal (25 km). Kristiansand, with ferry connections to Denmark and Germany, is only 60 km away, and Stavanger is around 200 km away.

history

Spangereid was already a "manor house" in the time of the Vikings . It later became a solid market center and is considered one of the oldest settlements in Norway. Today the village is littered with relics; A military installation and a canal deserve special mention. This canal was completed on July 4, 2007 and allows boat traffic like in Viking times. Furthermore, the remains of several large boat houses and a number of burial mounds have been preserved. Spangereid also has one of the oldest churches in Norway, made of a mixed stone and wood construction.

From 1839 Spangereid together with Konsmo , Valle and Vigmostad formed the Audnedal (Undal) formannskapsdistrikt . In 1844 Audnedal was divided again into Sør- and Nord-Audnedal . Spangereid and Valle went together in the municipality of Sør-Audnedal. This commune was divided again in 1897 - Valle kept the name Sør-Audnedal, Spangereid was independent until 1964. After that, a large part of Spangereid went together with Sør-Audnedal and Vigmostad in the Lindesnes commune ; the part west of the Lenefjord became part of Lyngdal.

today

Even if Spangereid has one of the largest employers in the Greater Region with GE Healthcare (a manufacturer of X-ray contrast media), Spangereid itself is primarily shaped by tourism . Especially the Lindesnes fyr and the salmon-rich Audna attract many people (especially “fishing tourists”) from Northern Norway, Germany, Belgium and Holland every year. In 2006, with the Vikingland and the barna dyre park (a children's animal park ), further attractions especially for children were added.

The Spangereid Canal , opened in 2007, contained its name based on the location.
