history

With a royal decree of March 5, 1839, the Sparkasse was founded on July 1, 1839 in the tower room of the old Chemnitz town hall. The rapid growth of the city and the increasing thrift of the population led to the expansion of the savings bank, so that the first branch was opened in 1882.

Of the ten branches that had been opened in the city by 1923, eight had to be temporarily closed due to inflation. Although the situation in the financial budget of the city and the savings bank was critical, it was decided in 1928 to rebuild the main office. Two years later the building on Falkeplatz was inaugurated.

The Kreissparkasse Chemnitz was created in 1950 from the amalgamation of the savings banks from the districts of Chemnitz, Stollberg and Rochlitz. Eight years later, the division into Stadt- and Kreissparkasse took place.

The introduction of EDP technology in 1974 brought the integration of ATMs into the self-service network. There was a gradual changeover to computer workstations by the mid-1980s.

With the political change in 1989 and the associated monetary union on July 1, 1990, the structure of the Stadtsparkasse Karl-Marx-Stadt (formerly and again from 1990 Chemnitz) changed. The number of employees has doubled within two years. Investments were associated with the construction and renovation of branches and the expansion of the range of products. New self-service devices, such as cash dispensers and bank statement printers, were introduced.

In 1993, the Stadtsparkasse and the Kreissparkasse Chemnitz merged to form Sparkasse Chemnitz. Three years later, the merger with the district savings banks Glauchau and Hohenstein-Ernstthal followed. This created one of the largest savings banks in Saxony and a market leader in the city and in the Chemnitzer Land district.

In 1998 the new Moritzhof headquarters was completed and inaugurated.
