Population development in Chemnitz according to the table below. Above from 1466 to 2018. Below an excerpt from 1871

While the population was around 10,500 in 1800, Chemnitz became the 15th major city in Germany in 1883 with over 100,000 inhabitants . As early as 1901, the city was home to 200,000 people.

The decline in the number of inhabitants during the First World War from around 320,000 townspeople in 1914 to 278,000 residents four years later, contrary to all forecasts, was quickly compensated for. The prognoses, which predicted massive emigration as a result of the inadequate food situation, did not come true and in 1919 there were again more than 300,000 inhabitants in the city.

The city had its highest population in 1930 with a population of 360,250. Presumably, the actual number of inhabitants was higher than this number, as the city administration identified the illegal use of gazebos and similar accommodations as a problem to be taken seriously. In relation to the then urban area with an area of approximately 80.5 km², this results in a population density of 4,475 inhabitants per square kilometer. Since 1880 the incorporations, for example the suburbs of Gablenz, Kappel, Altendorf and Hilbersdorf, had a significant share in this.

According to inaccurate sources, it is believed that around 75 percent of the population were blue-collar workers. This coincides with the age structure of the city from 1933. With the onion shape, it reflects the typical structure of cities that benefit from the influx of able-bodied people between the ages of 20 and 40. The population growth is not based on a birth surplus because the younger population is less represented.

Chemnitz was affected by a sharp population decline between 1989 and 2010. The city lost almost 25 percent of its population between 1990 and 2009, based on the current territorial status. As a result of numerous incorporations of rural areas in the 1990s, the introduction of a second home tax in 2006 and positive economic development, the decline in population was initially slowed down. The city's population fell in December 2003 (according to the State Statistical Office of the Free State of Saxony) below the limit of 250,000. Since 2010 the statistics show a population increase again (as of December 2013).

On June 30, 2009 the “ official population ” of Chemnitz was 243,092 according to the updates of the State Statistical Office of the Free State of Saxony (only main residences and after comparison with the other state offices). On May 9, 2011, the key date for the 2011 census , the number of inhabitants in Chemnitz was set at 240,253 and was 1.1 percent below the number determined by the State Statistical Office of Saxony, which was based on updates of the population from October 3, 1990. In the municipal register, which keeps its own statistics, there was a difference of 200 counted residents, i.e. 0.08 percent.

Older estimates assumed that the population of Chemnitz will settle between 207,000 and 214,000 by 2020 (based on the current area of 220.85 km²). Since the population decline in Chemnitz has slowed down significantly and has even turned into growth again, the number of inhabitants will probably be significantly higher. Estimates from 2007 assumed a population between 225,800 and 232,600 people for 2020. However, these estimates are also out of date after the population of Chemnitz increased from 240,543 to 248,645 between 2011 and 2015. Since 2016 it has fluctuated in the range of 247,000 inhabitants. The population has been falling again since 2019. As of November 30, 2019, there was a decrease of 931 inhabitants compared to the previous year. The city of Chemnitz states its population as of January 31, 2020 as 246,669 (previous year: 247,683). In the three following months of 2020 (until April 30, 2020) the population fell again by 900.

The following overview shows the number of inhabitants according to the respective territorial status. Up to 1831 these are mostly estimates, then census results (¹) or official updates from the city administration (until 1944), the state central administration for statistics (1945 to 1989) and the state statistical office (from 1990). From 1834 the information relates to the “customs clearance population”, from 1871 to the “local population”, from 1925 to the resident population and since 1966 to the “population at the place of the main residence”. Before 1834, the number of inhabitants was determined according to inconsistent survey methods.

age structure

2006 is the first year since the start of the data series with an increasing proportion of children. Since the beginning of the data series, the proportion of the elderly group has increased. Until 1998 the proportion of the population of working age increased. This proportion has been decreasing since 1998.

The following overview shows the development of the total population and that of the individual age groups since 1990. All data are from December 31st of each year and relate to the territorial status of Chemnitz since January 1st, 1999.

Forecasts

Forecasts by the city of Chemnitz from July 2016 showed that the population of the city of Chemnitz with the current area of 220.86 square kilometers of city area will level off between 249,600 and 262,200 inhabitants by 2030. This estimate therefore envisages a slight increase in the number of inhabitants in the future, in contrast to previous forecasts by various institutions. This can be explained, among other things, by the fact that population declines since 2006 have only been subject to natural population movements, i.e. a negative birth balance . The spatial migration movement in 2006 included a positive migration balance in favor of the city of Chemnitz , with more immigrants than emigrants . The population increased slightly in 2010 from 240 577 (2009) to 240 809 ,, 2012 to 241,705 and by March 2019 to 247,360 inhabitants.

December 31, 2025 242,600 236,000
December 31, 2030 236,300 230,100

In addition to the decline in the number of inhabitants, there is a shift in the age structure. At the end of 2002, the proportion of people under the age of 15 was 10.1% due to a low birth rate. That was the lowest level in a large city in Germany. The proportion of 15 to 25 year olds was 12.3%, that of 25 to 60 year olds 47.5%. The proportion of people over 60 was 30.1% and rose by 2.5% to 32.6% by September 30, 2008 and to 34.56% by March 31, 2019, which is still the highest value for a German Big city is. In the meantime, there is a trend reversal in births.
