history

In 1953, the Kreissparkasse Ulm (founded in 1847) merged with the Stadtsparkasse Ulm (founded in 1906) to form the District and Stadtsparkasse Ulm. In 1973 the Kreis- und Stadtsparkasse Ulm merged with the Kreissparkasse Ehingen to form the Sparkasse Ulm.

criticism

In 2013, the Sparkasse Ulm was reported across Germany. The reason for this is the questionable approach to the “Scala” savings deposits. The installment savings contracts, which have a long term of 25 years, were concluded between 1993 and 2005. The saver receives gradually more interest over the term. In the low interest rate environment of 2013, the contracts were particularly profitable for savers. The Sparkasse Ulm therefore tried to persuade customers to terminate the contracts. The savings bank offered shorter alternative investments. There was then a court hearing as to whether the Sparkasse had the right to terminate the Scala contracts. In addition, the Sparkasse Ulm refused the Scala owners to adjust their monthly rate. In February 2015, the Sparkasse Ulm appealed against a judgment of the Ulm Regional Court , in which it was established that there was no ordinary right of termination and that the Sparkasse had to carry out the rate adjustment in accordance with the contract. The Stuttgart Higher Regional Court rejected the appeal. The Sparkasse appealed against this to the Federal Court of Justice . Subsequently, the Sparkasse concluded with the more than 60 savers who had filed lawsuits, but then settled and withdrew the revision.
