history

The four-storey building, inspired by the Bauhaus architecture , is considered to be the most important new commercial building in today's city of Herne of the 1920s. The town of Wanne-Eickel, to which the Sparkasse belonged, acted as the client. Essentially, the exterior of the building has been preserved in its original form. However, the ground floor in particular shows changes in the area of the original shop windows , some of which are now closed, and the entrance area to the Sparkasse. Following the construction of the new savings bank, the Roter Block multi-family residential complex was built from 1927 to 1929 and according to a project from the same architectural office for the “Gemeinnützigen Bauverein Essen” .

The entry of the building of the Sparkasse Wanne-Eickel in the monument list of the city of Herne took place on January 9, 1991 (monument no. A 155).

architecture

The two- wing clinker building with five axes to the main street and nine axes to the Amtmann-Winter-Straße is rounded off to the street corner. The four floors are each highlighted by cornices and ribbons along their entire length. Viewed from the corner, the two symmetrically arranged staircases give the wings a special accentuation.
