The Sparkassen-Skiarena in Oberwiesenthal is one of the highest ski stadiums in Germany at an altitude of 1100 meters above sea level.
history
In 1974 the construction of the biathlon and cross-country skiing stadium on Fichtelberg began , which was completed in 1978. Various running tracks and a biathlon shooting range with 16 lanes were built. In 2004 it was decided that the facility should be modernized and a new shooting range with 25 lanes should be built. The official groundbreaking ceremony took place on July 22, 2005 and in the same year, on October 30, 2005, the new shooting range was officially inaugurated. After the winter break, construction work on the remaining parts of the facility began in May 2006. The topping-out ceremony was celebrated on July 12, 2006. After the renovation, the Sparkasse ski arena was inaugurated on December 2, 2006.
The new construction of the functional building and the redesign of the area cost just under 1.1 million. Almost two thirds of the construction costs flowed through the Free State of Saxony as subsidies . The remaining third came from the savings banks in the region and the East German Savings Bank Association. For this reason, the members of the WSC Erzgebirge Oberwiesenthal eV decided to give the name rights to the ski arena to the Sparkasse.
The ski arena is used by competitive athletes from the Oberwiesenthal Olympic base as a training facility, but it can also be used by recreational athletes and tourists. The ski stadium routes are connected to the Fichtelberg tourist trails. A 6 km long asphalt roller-ski run is currently available for summer training . In 2010 the paved routes were expanded.
Competitions
Under the direction of the WSC Erzgebirge Oberwiesenthal eV, several German Cup races and German championships took place here, both in cross-country skiing and in biathlon . On the third weekend in January, the annual Ore Mountains Ski Marathon is held with over 500 participants. In addition, international highlights took place: Continental Cups for cross-country skiers (January 2010 and 2011), the European Forestry Championships (March 2008) and the Senior World Championships in cross-country skiing, the so-called Masters World Cup (March 1-9, 2012).
In February 2010 the World Sleddog Association (WSA) also hosted the World Sleddog Association (WSA) sled dog championship. A 24-hour mountain bike race called the "24-hour MTB Challenge Fichtelberg" was held for the first time in the summer of 2010 around the Sparkasse ski arena.
