The German Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe supports partner organizations abroad through the Sparkassenstiftung für Internationale Zusammenarbeit, whose target groups are small and medium-sized companies , the poor and marginalized social groups. The foundation is committed to financial inclusion and access to financial services. The projects are carried out in all specialist areas of the banking business. It focuses on six key areas in technical cooperation :

  • Financial education
  • Development of regional institutes
  • Rural Financing
  • Green finance

Sparkassenstiftung's development cooperation supports the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals with projects on financial inclusion .

organization

Contrary to its name, the organization founded in 1992 is not a foundation, but a registered association whose members come from the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe. These members provide the board of trustees , which monitors the activities of the foundation board and determines the guidelines for project work, and the board of directors . The chairman of the board of trustees is Helmut Schleweis , his deputy Michael Breuer . The board of directors is responsible for managing and representing the Sparkassenstiftung externally. The chairman of the board is Heinrich Haasis , another member is Hans Ulrich Schneider . Schleweis is President of the German Savings Banks and Giro Association, Haasis was his predecessor in this role.

Financing comes from the proceeds of the foundation's capital, donations from the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe and, to a large extent, from external donors. The largest external donors are the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development , the German Society for International Cooperation , the World Wide Fund For Nature , the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) .

The annual budget is approx. € 21 million (as of 2018). Around 40 employees work at the Bonn headquarters, while around 300 other employees work on projects abroad.

Implementation of the project work

Sparkassenstiftung works in over 50 countries in Africa, Southeast Asia, Central Asia, the Caucasus, Central and South America. Seconded workers and local staff work in the project offices. To this end, 400 short-term experts are deployed every year.

Sparkassenstiftung supports financial institutions that sustainably promote economic and social development at local, regional or national level through needs-based banking. It has set itself the goal of increasing the professionalism of its partner institutions so that they can offer their customers permanent access to financial services. In particular, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), but also marginalized social groups are the partner institutes of the Sparkassenstiftung.

For knowledge transfer and financial literacy Sparkassenstiftung has the business games and business simulations developed. The interactive transfer of knowledge takes place with the help of haptic and computer-based simulations. The business games have been translated into many national languages and are used in the project countries. They are carried out by international and local trainers who have been trained by Sparkassenstiftung.
