Chunky saxifrage ( Saxifraga squarrosa )

The chunky saxifrage is a perennial plant that reaches heights of 4 to 10 centimeters. It grows in firm cushions and forms columnar shoots with dense roof tiles. The rosette leaves are elongated, linear, stiff, upward, never spatulate and are only slightly bent outward at the tip. They are ciliate at the base , briefly pointed at the front and have 3 to 5 lime-secreting dimples. The flower stalk is more or less glandular , also glabrous, leafy and has the umbel-like inflorescence with 2 to 7 flowers. The petals are 4 to 6 millimeters long and have 3 to 5 nerves.

Flowering time is from June to August.

The species has chromosome number 2n = 26.

Occurrence

The savings engined saxifrage is in the area of the Judikarischen Alps to the Karawanken endemic . It occurs on limestone cliffs at altitudes of 120 to 2700 meters and is common.
