The Speckgraben , ditch ditch in official topographical maps , is a ditch on the Havel island Töplitz in the Potsdam-Mittelmark district .

location

The Speckgraben is located on the Havel island of Töplitz and rises in the peat-digging lakes in Alt-Töplitz and runs through the breach (an ice age channel) in Neu-Töplitz. Then further through a wooded area, where it flows through the valley of Speckberg and Heidberg on the right and Neuen Weinberg on the left. Behind the Speckdammbrücke, the ditch flows over meadows to the mouth in the Sacrow-Paretz Canal . The trench has a total length of 2.5 km. The ditch used to stretch from the peat pits between the towns of Neu-Töplitz and Alt-Töplitz, across today's sports field, through the Seeke to the Havel . However, the ditch at this point was drained by the construction of the sports field and the expansion of Alt-Töplitz. You can still see a heavily swamped arm of the trench from the Havel to the Seeken.

use

In the past, peat and clay were mined in the peat cutting lakes, in the brook and in other places where the ditch runs through . With the help of the trench, these degradation products were then transported by barge. For this purpose, the Speckgraben was initially expanded and straightened. Now the Speckgraben has the task of flooding or draining the meadows and swamps that are located on the Graben. This is regulated with a lock at the mouth of the Sacrow-Paretz Canal.

nature

At the end of the peat and clay mining period, nature quickly reclaimed the banks of the Speckgraben and a natural landscape with an extraordinary biodiversity was created . The excavation holes were filled with groundwater and became small ponds and lakes with numerous fish and other aquatic animals, and a swamp area was created in which many amphibians found a safe haven. The area at the Graben is now a nature reserve .

Speckdammbrücke

The Speckdammbrücke is a wooden bridge on the lower course of the trench. The Töplitz cycle path F3.1 runs over the bridge and the Speckdammbrücke is also used as a car bridge, it is also important for agriculture. In earlier times the bridge was important for the residents of the village of Göttin am Göttinsee , because the Speckdamm with the Speckdammbrücke was the only access to the place, but today there is another way to Göttin. The bridge has been restored several times. It is one of three crossings from the Speckgraben.
