The Speed ​​Chess Championship 2018 (SCC) is a blitz chess tournament that took place in autumn 2018 and was hosted by Chess.com , a company that operates a large chess server . The 2018 tournament was the third edition of the competition to determine the "world speed chess champion".

qualification

14 of the 16 participants were selected and invited by chess.com. The remaining two places were awarded to the winners of an invitation tournament and an open qualifying tournament. A seeding list based on the participants' blitz chess scores was then published on chess.com.

Game mode

Each match consisted of

  • 90 minutes blitz chess with 5 minutes to think about and one second increment (time credit) per move (5 | 1)
  • 60 minutes of blitz chess with 3 minutes to think about and one second of increments per move (3 | 1)
  • 30 minutes of bullet chess with one minute to think about and one second of increments per move (1 | 1).

The player with the most points after the last 1 | 1 game qualified for the next round. If there was a tie after the last 1 | 1 game, four more 1 | 1 games were played as a mini-match. If this mini -match ended in a draw, too, an Armageddon game with five minutes for White and three minutes for Black, with no time credits, was decided. White had to win, and in a draw, Black continued.
