Wojciech Niedziela (born January 18, 1961 in Rybnik ) is a Polish jazz musician ( piano , composition ). He leads the jazz piano class at the Karol Szymanowski Music Academy in Katowice.

Niedziela graduated from the Karol Szymanowski Music Academy in Katowice , where he attended Andrzej Zubek's piano class.

Niedziela initially led the New Presentation ensemble with his twin brother Jacek Niedziela and Jerzy Głód in the rhythm section and the soloists Lora Szafran and Piotr Wojtasik , which had already released a live album in Poland in 1983. In 1985 he was invited to the SWF New Jazz Meeting with other Polish and British musicians . He recorded four albums under his own name. One of them - To Kiss the Ivories - was nominated twice for the Fryderyk Prize in 2000. Most recently the duo album Dark Morning was created in 2017 with trumpeter Piotr Schmidt.

Niedziela has performed with American jazz musicians such as Bobby Watson , Mike Mainieri , Jack Walrath , David Friedman , Dave Liebman , Bill Molenhof and Eddie Henderson . He has also accompanied vocalists such as Urszula Dudziak , Grażyna Auguścik , Dorota Miśkiewicz, Ewa Uryga and renowned leaders such as Michał Urbaniak , Janusz Muniak and Eryk Kulm. Since the mid-1990s he was part of Jan Ptaszyn Wróblewski's band , with whom he also made albums. He is also involved in albums with musicians such as Zbigniew Namysłowski , Krzysztof Popek, Jacek Niedziela, Maciej Sikała, Piotr Baron, Henryk Miśkiewicz , Michał Kulenty, Piotr Wojtasik, Eryk Kulm, Michał Kulenty and Lora Szafran.

Since 1991 Niedziela taught in Katowice. In 2008 he completed his habilitation. In 2014 he was appointed professor in Katowice. His students include pianists like Piotr Wyleżoł , Piotr Wrombel, Marcin Wasilewski , Michał Tokaj, Przemysław Raminiak, Paweł Tomaszewski or Piotr Matusik.

Niedziela is also the artistic director of the International Jazz Workshops in Chodzież.

Prizes and awards

In 1983 Niedziela won first prize at the jazz improvisation competition in Katowice. In 1985 he won the Grand Prix at the jazz pianist competition in Kalisz. In the same year he received first prize with New Presentation at the competition of the Leverkusener Jazztage . In 1986 he was awarded the Stanisław Wyspiański ministerial art prize for young artists.
