Alvar Palmgren

Alvar Palmgren (born April 28, 1880 in Helsinki , Finland , † November 30, 1960 ibid) was a Finnish botanist. His botanical author abbreviation is " Palmgr. "

From 1904 to 1948 Palmgren taught at the New Swedish School of Education. Palmgren graduated in 1912, received his PhD in 1914, and became Professor of Botany in 1916. From 1916 to 1924 he was a lecturer, from 1924 to 1928 assistant and from 1928 to 1950 Swedish-speaking professor of botany at the University of Helsinki .

Work areas

Palmgren did research on the Åland flora and vegetation . He studied the occurrence and types of vascular plants and sedges in the forests and in the sea of Fennoscandinavia . More than 30 plants were named after Palmgren.

dispute

Palmgren had a heated argument with Paul Jaccard . Jaccard claimed that the generic coefficient postulated by him is a certain measure of factors influencing species diversity. In contrast, Palmgren, like Arthur Maillefer and the Hungarian mathematician George Pólya, attributed the fluctuations in biodiversity to purely coincidental effects.

This dispute was later also conducted between Charles Sutherland Elton and Carrington Bonsor Williams and between Peter Raymond Grant and Daniel Simberloff. Obviously none of the views prevailed, because the generic coefficient is still used in modern botany books as a measure of species diversity.

Others

In 1901 Nicholas II , Emperor of the Russian Empire , incorporated the Finnish Army into the Russian Army in 1901. Palmgren organized the resistance among the students and in 1902 many draftees did not obey the draft.

Alvar Palmgren was the brother of the politician Axel Palmgren, cousin of the writer and state nature conservation commissioner Rolf Odo Armand Palmgren and father of the zoologist Pontus Palmgren.
