Scott Andrew Stearney (born October 21, 1960 in Chicago , Illinois - † December 1, 2018 in Bahrain ) was an American naval aviator and Vice Admiral in the United States Navy , who served as commander of the United States Fifth Fleet, based in Bahrain.

education

Stearney was from Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics before joining the Navy in October 1982. He then began flight training and was promoted to naval aviation in April 1984. Stearney graduated from the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School and received a Masters of Science degree in National Resource Strategy from National Defense University .

Military career

Stearney flew the McDonnell Douglas F / A-18 Hornets in several squadrons and also commanded a squadron of F / A-18 Hornets. He temporarily commanded the Carrier Air Wing Seven , an aircraft carrier squadron , on the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower . He served as Commander of United States Naval Forces Central Command, United States Fifth Fleet, Combined Maritime Forces from May 2018 until his death on December 1, 2018. He died by suicide.
