The Dreiweiberner See , in Upper Sorbian Třižonjanski jězor , is located near Lohsa in Upper Lusatia ( Saxony ) and was created by flooding the Dreiweibern open-cast lignite mine , which was also known in mining circles as Glückauf III. Between 1984 and March 1989, around 14 million tons of brown coal were mined there. The lake got its name from the Lohsa district of Dreiweibern , which is located on the northern shore of the lake.
The water dammed in the open pit is the Kleine Spree . The flooding began on July 8, 1996. In 2002 the lake had reached its final, stable water level and was opened to bathers in 2005. On May 2, 2009, the lake was handed over to the Lohsa community by the Lausitzer und Mitteldeutsche Bergbau-Verwaltungsgesellschaft (LMBV) .
The lake belongs to the Lusatian Lakeland . Sandy beaches emerged on the south side near Lohsa and northwest near Weißkollm . No other beaches are planned. 16 different fish species have been recorded in the lake since 2008. Some selected areas have been reserved for fishing. The lake and its surroundings are largely preserved for nature conservation. In addition, the lake, together with the Lohsa II reservoir , is responsible for the water management regulation of the small Spree. This happened beforehand through the groundwater pumps in the surrounding opencast mines. The water level of the two lakes can change by up to 7 m in the future. With a storage space of 35 million m³, the usable amount of water in the lake is approx. 5 million m³.
