The Sphaera is a total work of art in the old town of Salzburg , consisting of

  • a male figure, standing on a huge golden ball on Kapitelplatz , and
  • the "woman in the rock", a female figure in a crevice in the Toscanini courtyard.

The work of art was created by the German sculptor Stephan Balkenhol as part of the “ Salzburg Art Project ” in 2007 .

This work of art is better known under the colloquial term "Balkenhol-Mozartkugel". It consists of a gold-plated, two-ton ball with a diameter of five meters. The ball is made of glass fiber reinforced plastic and rests on a wrought iron frame with a weight of 3.5 tons. A bronze male figure with black trousers and a white shirt, weighing 300 kilograms, stands on the sphere at a height of nine meters. These clothes are typical for works of art by Stefan Balkenhol.

The counterpart to the much taller man standing on the ball is a woman in a red dress who stands in a rock niche in the Toscaninihof. It should remind of a tunnel saint.

This work of art can be traced back to an initiative of the Salzburg Foundation. This was founded in 2001 as a private initiative and sees itself as a modern form of patronage. This project, which does not receive any public subsidies, aims to inspire international artists for the city of Salzburg and to encourage them to create a specific work of art for a location of their choice. The invitation was followed by artists such as Manfred Wakolbinger , Anselm Kiefer , Mario Merz , Marina Abramović , Markus Lüpertz , James Turrell , Tony Cragg , Christian Boltanski , Jaume Plensa , Brigitte Kowanz , Erwin Wurm and Stephan Balkenhol.
