Spirit of Mozart

Spirit of Mozart is an art installation on the right side of the Salzach in the immediate vicinity of the State Bridge in the old town of Salzburg . The work of art was created as part of the “ Salzburg Art Project ” in 2004 by the Yugoslav performance and video artist Marina Abramović .

The artwork

The third work for Kunstprojekt Salzburg is an "interactive sculpture" that consists of an extensive arrangement of armchairs . A 15-meter-high armchair is surrounded by eight armchairs that can be used by the public. The installation made of stainless steel invites visitors to meditate . Marina Abramović consciously chose the lively urban space. With the project she wanted to create a place of reflection in the middle of the pulsating city center of Salzburg and dedicate it to "the spirit of Mozart ". According to Marina Abramović, music plays an important role in the life of Salzburg residents alongside religion. Almost everyone still associates Salzburg with music today, but especially with Mozart. According to the artist, when you walk through the streets of Salzburg you never see the horizon because mountains open up all around. These geographical conditions made the residents more introspective and felt the need to create their own traditions and rules. “I want to build a seat for the spirit of Mozart. It is 15 meters high, has no seat, just the outer shape of a chair. If you stand under it, you can see the sky. The mind is invisible, but when you set up a seat for it, the invisible becomes visible. Anyone who sits and thinks long enough can connect with invisible forces. Mozart and Salzburg had an exciting relationship. From Salzburg he made numerous extensive trips to France, England and Italy in his youth, but it was in his hometown that he composed many important works. His spirit stayed in Salzburg, where his music was always alive. For me, the work "Spirit of Mozart" is the gesture of a new and different understanding, also a gesture of reconciliation.
