Field marking

The pitch marking serves to delimit a pitch on a lawn , artificial turf , sports surface or on the ice as well as to identify special zones, such as the penalty area and the center circle in football .

Marking of lawns

Methods

The traditional method of marking a lawn or tennis court is to stretch cord across the field and run the marking cart along it. After a one-off measurement , the groundskeeper will use marked fixed points on the edge of the field for orientation and attachment of the lines.

Technologies are now also available that can facilitate, accelerate and automate this work. There are laser-controlled devices on the market which do not require the step of tensioning the laces.

Basically, two different methods are used for ruling, dry marking and liquid marking.

Dry marking

Pure calcium carbonate or natural chalk is the ideal material for dry marking because it is environmentally friendly and classified as harmless to health - in contrast to slaked lime ( hydrated lime ) or unslaked lime ( calcium oxide ), which is corrosive in connection with water and in the Raising of the lines results. Calcium carbonate is hardly water-soluble, has the throwing power that is important for marking, good adhesion to the ground and can be easily recognized as pure white on the sports field. Both lawn and tennis courts can be lined with the dry marking.

The application is carried out with a purely mechanically functioning chalk trolley with vibrating sieve, which ensures that the chalk is evenly spread.

Building lime , also called white lime , like slaked or unslaked lime, may no longer be used for marking, as this can cause burns on players whose skin came into contact with the marking agent. Cases of blindness are documented. Bernd Förster had to take a three-month break after white lime got into a graze.

Liquid marking

The liquid marking for lawns is standard in professional sport but also widely used in the amateur sector. The paint application lasts longer than with dry marking, the paint adheres to the lawn and does not penetrate the soil. The appearance is therefore more accurate than that of dry marking.

The different products are available as basic powders, concentrates and directly usable mixtures. Additives can make the lines less sensitive to moisture, among other things. Quality criteria of the marking paint are, among others, the luminosity and opacity, quick drying and environmental compatibility.

Various products are available in the area of marking trolleys. An electrical or mechanical pumping system is built into each model. Optionally, various canister sizes are available for the paint to be carried, various setting options for the flow rate and width of the paint application. Reinforced batteries are useful when used in larger sports facilities.
