The Spillimacheen River is an approximately 90 km long left tributary of the Columbia River in the eastern part of the Canadian province of British Columbia .

River course

The headwaters of the Spillimacheen River is located at an altitude of about 1900  m in the north of the Purcell Mountains below Bald Mountain and Copperstain Mountain . The Spillimacheen River flows mainly in a south-easterly direction through the mountains. 16 km above the mouth, the Bobbie Burns Creek , the most important tributary, meets the Spillimacheen River from the west. This finally flows into the Columbia River 57 km southeast of Golden at the Spillimacheen settlement . 1.5 km above the estuary, an estuary branches off to the left.

Hydrology

The catchment area of ​​the Spillimacheen River covers an area of ​​approximately 1460 km². The mean discharge 3 km above the mouth is 34.6 m³ / s. The highest runoffs usually occur between June and August.

Use of hydropower

4.8 km above the mouth there is a weir, to which a part of the river water 1100 m long tunnel and two short pressure lines the effluent situated above a hydroelectric power plant is supplied. The power station operated by BC Hydro is 3.2 km above the estuary. It has 3 Francis turbines (2 × 0.9 MW and 1 × 2.2 MW). The expansion flow is 8.25 m³ / s. The average annual production is 21 GWh.
